PRINCESS BARI AND THE LAST TIGER / 바리 공주와 마지막 호랑이
A MULTIMEDIA CONCERT COMPOSED BY THEODORE WIPRUD With a NARRATION and ILLUSTRATION
Director/ Marion Schoevaert. Artist/ Han DongHwi
PRINCESS BARI is inspired by the Korean mythological fairytale “Princess Bari, the First Shaman.” This adaptation is a tale of femininity, humility, and self-realization, concluding with Bari’s choice to live in the liminal space between the human and natural spirit worlds. The production reinterprets the traditional story of the cast away seventh daughter as a journey of ecological consequence.
Composer Theodore Wiprud will create a new, one-hour dramatic work for a small chamber orchestra of Korean gugak instruments alongside classical strings, winds, and percussion. Wiprud specializes in creating new musical worlds where sounds from disparate cultures meet on equal footing. PRINCESS BARI will bring to life a pancultural mythic realm, where the daegeum (gugak flute) embodies the voice of Princess Bari, at the same fragile, emotionally resonant, and with deep wisdom.
A fusion of traditional and digital aesthetics, the performance is anchored by a groundbreaking visual landscape: 25 large-scale frescos, created by Han DongHwi. These digital collages of "artificial nature" are projected behind the musicians, blending traditional Korean landscapes with contemporary photo-composites.
